Outcomes

  • Pupils can describe the difference between a series and a parallel circuit
  • Pupils can appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits

Specification References

  • 2.14 know that lamps and LEDs can be used to indicate the presence of current in a circuit
  • 2.9 explain why a series or parallel circuit is more appropriate for particular applications including domestic lighting
  • 2.10 understaned that the current in a series circuit dpends on the applied voltage and the number and nature of other components

Starter

If you have yet to give the circuit symbols quiz, this is an ideal time.

Main Body of Lesson

The main body of the lesson consists of a modified Vince sheet which we've used for a while and some work with ammeters and voltmeters. This is an ideal time to ensure that they can use ammeters and voltmeters correctly. Ideally they would have simple ammeters and voltmeters rather than multimeters. There is a powerpoint with the relevant circuit diagrams on.

Plenary

Use the toaster link in the powerpoint to go to a circuit simulator and check understanding

OR

There is a quick 10 question plenary quiz in the shared folder (alternatively you can use it as a starter next lesson)

Homework

  • Read 178-179 and answer questions - nice recap of last year and some meter questions
  • Read 186-187 and answer questions - series parallel questions

Additional Information

Resources Required

12x the following:

  • 2 x 1.5V cells
  • 3 x 1.5V bulbs
  • 1 x simple ammeter
  • 1 x simple voltmeter
  • 2 x 10 ohm resistor
  • 1 x 20 ohm resistor
