Starter

offer the choice of the following amounts of gold (or sweets or whatever); 0.0004kg, 556mg, 0.65g or 368,000μg. Try to get across why we need prefixes

Main Body of Lesson

  • Discuss the centi prefix; they will be most familiar with this prefix and should use it when applying other prefixes
  • Discuss milli and kilo; again they should be familiar with these.
  • Pupils to complete the questions from sheet
  • Encourage the pupils to think about whether the answer looks right. For example if they convert 50km to 0.05m does that sound right? Try to get across the concept that multiples are larger than the standard unit whereas sub-multiples are smaller than the standard units.
