Outcomes
- Pupils can:
Reinforce Current is the rate of flow of charge Q = I × t
Introduce idea of free electron movement in metals- which way do they flow? Conventional current.
Show charge flow in an electrolyte – ions = charged particles
Specification References
2.15 understand that current is the rate of flow of charge
2.16 recall and use the relationship between charge, current and time : charge = current × time
2.17 recall that electric current in solid metallic conductors is a flow of negatively charged electrons
Starter
- Class act as charges in a circuit. Which way would they move if they were i) positive ii) negative?
- Cannot see charges moving in a metal but can observe what happens in a liquid (electrolyte)
Main Body of Lesson
Class Practical: Electrolysis
- Plan and predict: which side to place the 10p. What will be observed? What will change if you keep the circuit running for longer?
- Coating 10pence pieces with copper during electrolysis of CuSO4
Plenary
- How does the 10pence piece get copper coated?
