Outcomes

  • Pupils can aprreciate that mass remains constant whilst weight changes when travelling the universe
  • Pupils can use and rearrange the weight equation

Specification References

1.15 recall and use the relationship between weight, mass and g: Weight = mass x g, W = m x g

1.31 understand gravitational feild strength, g, and recall that it is different on other planets and the Moon from that on the Earth.

Starter

  • Pupils to discuss the difference between mass and weight
  • Ask pupils how scales or top pan balances work. Would they work in space?

Main Body of Lesson

  • Define difference between mass and weight. This is a good opportunity to use the small white boards. There is a brief powerpoint in Science Shared
  • Interplanetary Can experiment. An updated sheet linked to the powerpoint is in Science Shared
  • Video clip of moon experiments; link to Newton's Laws of Gravitation. If time, then perform the guinea and feather experiment.
