The main differences that need to be identified are:

  • a stationary wave consists of two waves travelling in opposite directions that superpose, where as a travelling wave is a single wave;
  • a statioanry wave does not transmit any energy or information, where as a travelling wave does;
  • a stationary wave has nodes and anti-nodes, where as along a travelling wave every point has a maximum amplitude
