Demonstration 1

This follows on nicely from 2.1 (b). In examining these characteristics it is also an opportunity to show how different pieces of apparatus work:

  • Have a signal generator connected to a speaker and a microphone connected to an oscilloscope

Resources

Analysis

Use the grid to get the pupils to estabilsh the time period from the scale (and show them how to adjust it), they can then calculate the frequency from this. Next, they can also measure the amplitude (again, showing them how to adjust the scale).

Demonstration 2

Using a similar set up as for Demonstration 1, but with two microphones, they can be set up so that the microphones are a distance one wavelength apart to measure the wavelength.

Resources

Analysis

This is an ideal opportunity to discuss phase and coherence with the pupils - in phase, anti-phase and quadrature (leading and lagging).

Demonstration 3

This is also an opportunity to demonstrate the Russian Wave Machine. This follows on from the discussion on phase and leads to a talk about displacement.

Resources

Analysis

When using the Russian Wave Machine get the pupils to draw Sine waves, label them and start to get them used to the idea of radians, especially when talking about phase.
