Demonstration 1

Stretching a long piece of (copper) wire. From this you can, if you are careful and precise, get data to show aspects like the yeild point. You can also use other material to compare with copper.

Analysis

Plot a force-extension curve for the material(s). Identify points such as the Hooke's law region, yeild point and plastic flow region.

Equipment

1x 3m of wire, 1x 2 restraining blocks, 1x clamp, 1x pulley 40x 50g masses, 1x vernier callipers, 1x tape, 1x hook

Safety

Safety goggles should be warn at all times. Nobody should be stood at either the pulley end or the clamped end looking along the length of the wire
