Class Experiment 1

Tyrolean traverse. Two pulleys are set either side of a pin board. 3 masses are used to hang on each side of the pulleys. The three masses should be different and set in equilibrium. A piece of graph paper sits behind the string and the angles of the string and forces are recoded.

Resources

Analysis

Firstly a vector triangle is drawn to show that the forces sum = 0. Secondly a mathematical analysis is done, finding the components of the forces and showing that the vertical and horizontal components = 0

Equipment

1x pin board, masses, sring, 2x pulley, graph paper & masking tape.

Class Experiment 2

Competition to find the mass of a Barby using the Tyrolean travers method. The mass of the barby is found using a set of scales and compared to the pupils' reults, the closest value wins!

Resources

Analysis

This is done using the mathematical process of finding components of the forces.
