Outcomes

  • Pupils understand that thermal energy is always transferred from a hotter body to a cooler body/environment.
  • Pupils can describe transfers of thermal energy by conduction, convection and radiation.

Starter

  • Cook popcorn in two ways: with microwave radiation and in a pan by conduction. Probably best not to eat it.

Main Body of Lesson

  • Ask pupils why the popcorn popped. There are some great slow motion videos you can show.
  • Elicit the idea that the popcorn heated up - why?
  • Move pupils towards the idea that thermal energy is transferred from hotter objects to colder ones.
