Demonstration
Terminal velocity. Set up an airtrack with the trolly and a large board at one end and a motion sensor at the other. The trolley is pulled by a mass and the board is used to create air resistance. Use the PASCO motion sensor to measure s-t.
Resources
Analysis
Create v-t and a-t graphs from the data and discuss the motion caused by the resultant force.
Equipment
1x airtrack 1x trolley 1x masses 1x PASCO motion sensor 1x large board
Safety
The masses must be free to fall without hitting anyone's foot.
Demonstration
Terminal vlocity. Barbie on a parachute from a high building.
Resources
Analysis
Discuss and identfy the forces acting on Barbie whilst in flight.
Equipment
Safety
Make sure there is no body below in the drop zone.
Demonstration
Falling stones. Get the class to use their knowledge of suvat to calculate where you would have to tie 6 stones along a rope, so when they are dropped they hit the floor at 0.25 second intervals. Then with their calculated distances, tie on the stones and drop from a high place or stair well.
Resources
Analysis
Go through calculations before the rope is tied to the stones.
Equipment
1x long string, 1x 6 small rocks/pebbles
Safety
Make sure there is no body below in the drop zone.
Demonstration
Terminal velocity with a ball bearing. Time the intervals of a ball bearing dropping through glycerol between predefined points (values required here, diameter of ball and interval length).
Resources
Analysis
Plot an average velocity against time graph and disucss the forces acting on the ball bearing to create this profile of graph.
Equipment
1x long measuring cylinder of glycerol, 5x ball bearing, 3x stop watch, 1x permanent marker, 1x magnet for retrieving ball bearings
Safety
Wipe up any spills immediately
